Flavonoids – They’re in Full Spectrum CBD so what are they?

These are included in a group known as Phytochemicals – a term that refers to a variety of plant-derived compounds with potentially life-saving therapeutic properties, such as anti-carcinogenic, anti-mutagenic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant. These vital compounds are in turn found in a group of substances known as polyphenols, that includes Flavonoids along with Phenolic Acids (commonly referred to as Phenols).

Flavonoids are one of the most abundant of the polyphenols. Though not unique to the cannabis plant, Flavonoids give plants their colour and prevent plant diseases. Cannabis contains about 20 varieties of Flavonoid.

Similar to Terpenes in the sense that we can smell and taste them, they are among the most understudied compounds found within the plant. They are important because they have demonstrable therapeutic effects similar to those found with Terpenes.

These include their anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-cancer properties. In addition, they have been shown to have and anti-allergic attributes.

According to a respected journal (http://www.ijcea.org/papers/416-N0002.pdf): ‘Flavonoids, catechins and their derivatives are considered as therapeutic agents in studies focused on degenerative diseases and brain aging processes, and serve as possible neuro-protective agents in progressive neuro-degenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases.’
